A travel diary written by Seweryn Goszczyński during his travels in Podhale, Spisz and Tatra Mountains in 1832. It covers the period from April 4 to November 1, 1832. It was printed in fragments in various periodicals starting from 1834, and published in full for the first time in 1853 in St. Petersburg. Diary
was one of the first great works devoted to the nature, culture and folklore of Podhale and the Tatra Mountains. It was written during Goszczyński's journey from Cracow to Łopuszna at the foot of the Gorce Mountains, where, as a wanted participant in the November Uprising, he took refuge in the manor house of Leon Tetmajer, and during excursions from there to the Tatra Mountains and Spisz (...) The work has the character of storytelling about highland life, shepherding or brigandage. The industriousness of the highlanders and their love of freedom, as well as their aspirations for independence are emphasized. Folk costumes are described, and a dictionary of the Podhale dialect has been compiled. The mountains themselves, however, are demonized and inhabited by bizarre creatures [source:
